In the days that followed, Moses did indeed supply a new batch of medallions that matched exactly the design that Eddie Milner had shown to Charles Blackett.

Meanwhile, Eddie worked carefully and came up with three new medallion designs. If anything, they were a little more adventurous and flamboyant than before. Charles Blackett appreciated that Eddie had talent and could see no reason why his designs would not be acceptable to the growing collectors’ market. He had showed them to his dealer, who was equally enthusiastic, although Blackett did not reveal that a new hand was responsible.

When Moses next called at the Rosemary Lane workshop with his latest sketch, Eddie looked at it closely, saw Billy approaching, and handed it back.

Billy apologised to Moses, saying that they had too much other work on and wouldn’t be able to produce any more copies for him.

Moses looked surprised, then crestfallen. “But Billy, we’ve both been doin’ well from this, haven’t we?”

“Yes, but we’ve received a lot more work from our marine customers recently and we need to concentrate on them, I’m afraid. I’m sorry, Moses, but there it is.”

Eddie Milner stifled a grin. He took pleasure in seeing Moses’ disappointment. The truth was that they’d been neglecting some of their old customers, due to the work from Moses. Now, with the prospect of supplying Blackett at a price that would earn them some serious profit, they could drop even more of them and concentrate on producing the Fontwells.

After Moses left the yard, Eddie wrapped an arm around Billy’s shoulders. “Come on partner, let’s get to work and be earning some real money!”
